Elevating Research Transparency in Zimbabwe

As a core partner of the TRACE initiative, Zimbabwe is moving beyond traditional oversight to establish a more visible and accountable research ecosystem. By modernizing its national approach to research ethics, the country is ensuring that its regulatory processes meet the highest international standards while remaining accessible to all stakeholders.

The Catalyst for Transformation

In July 2025, the Medical Research Council of Zimbabwe (MRCZ) undertook a comprehensive benchmarking exercise through the TRACE project. Utilizing the World Health Organization tool for benchmarking ethics oversight of health-related research involving human participants, the MRCZ established a clear baseline to inform its long-term capacity-building needs and measure future progress.

The assessment revealed a strong foundation, demonstrating that Zimbabwe possesses robust structures, compositions, and procedures for its Research Ethics Committees (RECs). However, it also identified a critical area for growth. There has only been partial implementation of REC transparency, accountability, and workflow automation. To bridge these gaps, the MRCZ is prioritizing a dual-pronged digital approach: a comprehensive website revamp and the deployment of an integrated digital ethics platform.

A Digital Window into Research Oversight

A well-designed landing page provides vital information for stakeholders and applicants, offering a clear view of institutional identity, functions, and mandates. The updated website will bring relevant information about the application review framework to the forefront.

Key enhancements include:

  • Navigation and Timelines: The site will feature application process maps, requirements, and a dedicated REC calendar with key dates for committee meetings and submission deadlines.
  • Guidance for Researchers: Users will find comprehensive ethics guidelines on how to perform research specifically within the Zimbabwean context.
  • A New Public Registry: To address the lack of a centralized research database, Zimbabwe is creating a public registry. This will include titles, principal investigators, and approval dates for all research proposals, aligning the country with international best practices for clinical trial transparency.
  • IRB Accreditation: The MRCZ is developing an accreditation roadmap for all Institutional Review Boards. These boards will be able to register and seek certification electronically, with their maturity levels made visible on the national website.

A Knowledge Clearinghouse for Research

The revamped website is designed to be a clearing house and one-stop shop for human research-related matters. It will serve the research fraternity by providing:

  • Online Training: On-demand training modules and certification will be available for researchers, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Automated Support: Mechanisms like chatbots will be deployed to efficiently handle queries and complaints.
  • Community Engagement: Overall visibility will be boosted through integrated social media links and increased digital interaction.

Looking ahead, the launch of the revamped website is strategically scheduled to coincide with the full deployment of the digital platform by the end of this year. Ultimately, this comprehensive digital transformation signals a profound shift from merely establishing institutional structures to actively demonstrating transparency and accountability in practice.

By evolving its digital infrastructure, Zimbabwe is reinforcing a robust, future-ready research governance system designed to serve the global scientific community while safeguarding its citizens. Stakeholders are encouraged to follow the TRACE project updates and explore the new digital gateway as soon as it goes live.
